We were back to the 25m range on Sunday 5th September for a couple of small bore disciplines, and with a good turn out there was plenty of close competition. Peter Biebrach triumphed in the PP1 with an excellent 298 / 300. In the Service B, Barrie Learmont showed a good return to form to win with 107 / 120 despite a jam!

Tom has confirmed the date and details for our forthcoming shooting day out on the military range at Penally.

Any shooters who haven't yet added their names to the list can do so in the clubhouse or contact Tom by email.

The full details are as follows:

  • Arrive Penally Railway Station - 09:00.
  • Travel down to the range and park up alongside the shooting points.
  • Briefing by the Range Warden.
  • Agree teams for look-outs etc.
  • Proceed to shooting points having confirmed telephone links are operational.
  • Open fire!

Marek took the full bore honours with a score of 247 (out of 300) in the latest competition, with Pete B winning the small bore on 257. A pleasant Sunday morning break in the Pembrokeshire summer weather saw the usual mix of great shooting and typical mishaps!

The club was the venue for the British Western Shooting Championships on the weekend of the 7th & 8th August. At the time of writing your correspondent doesn't have the full results available, but these will be posted as soon as possible.

Our competitions secretary, Tom Davies, is kindly arranging with the military range at Penally for us to have the opportunity to shoot there. Hopefully we will be able to arrange a club day out in the next couple of months - the date will be confirmed as soon as possible.

There will be some requirements for members to demonstrate ability to shoot reasonably accurately starting at 200m range and this can be done via the club. It will be a great opportunity to use guns which are too powerful for our own ranges.

A beautifully sunny morning heralded the much awaited Man v Man competition. This event is where two shooters (male or female) compete against each other over an identical course of fire using black powder revolvers, shotguns and under-lever rifles.

The 1500 competition continued on Sunday 27th June, with the small-bore round and some additional LBR competitors weighing in.

As always, there was close competition and plent of talking points: the usual calamities - shooting on the wrong target, dropped magazines in the middle of a very short duration course of fire and even an LBR which literally fell to bits during a reload!

But pride of place goes to a new member taking part in his very first competition with a borrowed gun - Ian McCallan managed a sensational score of 747 points in the .22 to take overall 1st place! Very well done, Ian. There'll be a few shooters with an eye on prizes this year looking over their shoulders now!

Due to the absence of key members of the club, the 1500 match which was orginally scheduled for 13th June took place on Sunday 20th June. It was a 'mini' version (90 rounds) for full bore only.

Most shooters used underlever rifles, but there were a couple of LBR's too, which was quite tricky at 50m range. The competition was keenly fought with Vaughan Holding coming out on top, shooting an excellent score of 866.

The Club has been able to arrange access to the shooting range at Penally and we are currently putting together a day trip for the club to go shooting full-bore rifle (black powder and nitro). The date will be announced as soon as it is confirmed.

As always, the club was well represented at the annual Phoenix Meeting held at Bisley over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend. This is the largest meeting held in Britain for gallery rifle, pistols and other types of rifle and some very creditable scores were recorded in various disciplines by our shooters, in particular, John Munt winning the 50m muzzle loading pistol event!
